Why we do this?
I believe in the saying, "A picture is worth a thousand words", due to an unforgettable experience I had in 2004 in the mountains in the Eastern Cape. We conducted water treatment demonstrations for the government with a mobile water treatment plant that was set up in a local river to treat the river water for domestic use by the local village community.
We had the water treatment plant up and running and I was on duty with the clean treated water hose, filling each and everyone's bucket as they were standing in line. These were the buckets that they normally used to fetch water from the river for domestic use, which was the untreated water that they were used to and not treated water.
They were all standing in line to get their buckets filled with clean treated water and I was filling up one bucket after the other and this young teenage girl place her white bucket in front of me to fill it up with clean water, while she stood watching.
I filled her bucket to the top and when it was full she just stood there looking at me with this strange expression on her face, which left me puzzled. I looked at her and asked her what was wrong, when she answered me by saying, "But I can see the bottom", which meant that she used to fetch later with this same bucket on a daily basis but that day was the first time that she could see the bottom of the bucket when it was full of water.
It was the first day that she experienced clean treated water, and it made me realize what we take for granted on a daily basis by just opening a tap to get fresh water.
I was once asked by the MD of a large German company to give an example of what I perceived as, "job satisfaction", and I told the this story and they were stunned. To this day, I still have pictures of that same day in the mountains in the Eastern Cape.
